Food for Thought — a healthier you, a healthier planet!Foods_(cropped)

Did you know that by improving your health, you can actually improve the health of our planet to alleviate climate change? “How are these related?” you might ask.
Why are some of us healthy and full of life, while others are sick and tired all the time? Why do some foods energize us, while others make us feel bloated or actually cause harm to our bodies and the well-being of all of our planet’s inhabitants?

Last year a group of us from UUCT gathered once a month to discuss our diets and the impact our diets made on our bodies, the planet, the people of our earth, and on the animals used in food production. We viewed movies and discussed them, and sometimes shared a meal. After completing an evaluation for our gatherings at the end of the year, we learned that the group wanted to continue, but with an emphasis on how to create healthy simple meals.

This year, we will gather again, but instead of in person, we will gather via Zoom. During our time together, we will reflect upon our diets and how our diets impact our own personal health, the health of our planet, the people who are producing our foods, and the animals used in our food production. Especially during this time of living with a pandemic, we need to learn how to keep up our immunities against diseases. Many of us have read and heard about the concern of our food supply chain breaking down and how food production plants have had to close. We’ve also read that vulnerable populations, such as people living in lower socioeconomic areas, people of color, older people, and people with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, should be more concerned about the impact of COVID 19 on their bodies.

So, let’s gather via zoom to support and educate each other on how to optimize our health and the health of our planet, by discussing the kinds of meals that we are preparing and eating in our own homes. Rather than viewing videos together, (as we did last year) let’s share the poignant articles and books that we’ve read, and videos that we’ve seen that address this very important topic. Let’s share information about the places where we get our food, recipes we’ve tried, and how we prepare our healthy food choices.
So, pour yourself a glass of your favorite beverage, gather up your favorite snacks, and log onto zoom so we can all learn together.
