Centering BIPOC Voices: A Reading and Discussion Group

We’ll start the New Year off right with the book selected as the UU Read for the year. Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment by Zach Norris. Beacon Press writes: “In a time when the most powerful institutions in the United States are embracing the repressive and racist systems that keep many communities struggling and in fear, we need to reimagine what safety means. Community leader and lawyer Zach Norris lays out a radical way to shift the conversation about public safety away from fear and punishment and toward growth and support systems for our families and communities. In order to truly be safe, we are going to have to dismantle our mentality of Us vs. Them. By bridging the divides and building relationships with one another, we can dedicate ourselves to strategic, smart investments—meaning resources directed toward our stability and well-being, like healthcare and housing, education and living-wage jobs. This is where real safety begins.”

The discussion for this book is scheduled for Saturday, January 8, at 3:30 PM via Zoom. We hope that members and friends of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tallahassee will join us for so we can expand the circle of UU’s who’ve thought about new avenues to safety.

All of our books are available in paper, ebook and audible versions to enhance accessibility. If you wish to join one of the Second Saturday discussions contact Robin Gray, (email available in the church directory and from the office).

Join us for a synergistic interfaith spiritual practice of many forms of singing, chanting, and group observation of silence.

The goal is to help each participant reach a place within themselves where they can connect with the Divine, their Inner Core, the Spirit of Life; wherever they find Peace. Led by Angel de Armendi, Music Director.

Singing Meditation is now every Tuesday (7:30 am) and Thursday (9:30 am) at the UUCT campus or via Zoom! Current UUCT Covid Safety Guidelines will be followed. Use the following link to join our zoom:  https://us06web.zoom.us/j/319800919   Meeting ID: 319 800 919

Satsang

Join us every Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the UUCT campus for a spiritual gathering and group integration. Traditionally, satsang referred only to a gathering in the presence of a true enlightened being, or satguru. In modern times, satsang has evolved to mean any gathering in which spiritual reflection, discussion, meditation or teaching takes place; for example, chanting in kirtan or philosophical debate in dharma talks

Food For Thought – a Healthier You, a Healthier Planet

Food For Thought will convene at 7:00 pm on January 13 via zoom only.

Bonnie Fesmire, one of our members will discuss the book, The Dorito Effect, by Mark Schatzker. In this book, the author tells us how much of the food we eat is no longer nutritious, nor tasty. Our food manufacturers are more interested in profit than nutrition, and unfortunately the Standard American Diet a.k.a. the SAD diet has caused an epidemic of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other health issues. The book fortunately ends on the upbeat, as the author does give a brief guide on how to eat better, offering a few basic rules.

If you’d like, bring a healthy snack or drink for yourself.  We hope that while we’re socializing we will also share some healthy recipes that we might have tried during the past holiday season. Please RSVP to Linda Oaksford at lloaksford@gmail.com, if you plan to attend, or if you’d like the zoom link. We look forward to seeing you.

UU Explorations

UU Explorations is a special Small Group Ministry for those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist. This is a sharing and listening circle about topics that relate to the theme: What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist? It is an opportunity to get to know others on a deeper level and reflect together on important topics and concepts in Unitarian Universalism. At each gathering, we: check in with each other on how our lives are going, share our thoughts on one of twelve topics, simply listen to one another, and then share any further reflections we have. The circle is specifically not a class or discussion group.

The next gathering will be held Tuesday, January 18 at 7:00 PM via Zoom. The topic will be “Spiritual Practice”.  For more information, the current readings, and Zoom details contact Trudy Deyle.
