Centering BIPOC Voices: July and August Discussions

By Robin Gray

We’re turning to summer reading having selected two novels. These aren’t light “beach reads” but instead offer narratives that can help us to understand diverse experiences more fully.

On Saturday, July 10th, we will be discussing “The Mountains Sing” by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai. NPR describes it as a: “complex family narrative that spans nearly a century of Vietnamese history, from the French colonial period through the communist Viet Minh’s rise to power, the separation between North and South Vietnam, the Vietnam War, all the way to the present day. Told alternately by Diệu Lan, born in 1920, and her granddaughter Hương, born in 1960, the novel resembles a choral performance with multiple voices.”

In August, we’ll gather on the 14th to share our perspectives on another novel “The Night Watchman” by Louise Erdrich. Booklist waxes eloquent about the book and the author: “A spellbinding, reverent, and resplendent drama…A work of distinct luminosity…Through the personalities and predicaments of her many charismatic characters, and through rapturous descriptions of winter landscapes and steaming meals, sustaining humor and spiritual visitations, Erdrich traces the indelible traumas of racism and sexual violence and celebrates the vitality and depth of Chippewa life…Erdrich at her radiant best.”

Centering BIPOC Voices continues to meet on the Second Saturday at 3:30 PM via Zoom. Our next meeting is Saturday, July 10. New people are always welcome to join in the discussion. Simply contact Robin Gray (robingray021@gmail.com) for more information and to be added to the mailing list.

Mindful Meditation

You are welcome to join us every Sunday from 3 PM to 4 PM on Zoom. We are a community of meditators who come together for a chance to center ourselves with calm and focus. Each week a member of the group leads the meditation, drawing from a variety of Buddhist thought. Our usual practice starts with a guided meditation or a passage reading while seated, followed by a walking meditation, then finishing with a silent meditation. At the conclusion, we share our experiences with each other.

Whether you are new or seasoned to the practice of meditation, all are welcome. Please email Ardenkelly@yahoo.com for the Zoom link invitation to be sent to you every Saturday.

Arden Kelly is a Director & Teaching Artist Acting/Voice & Speech/Voiceover/Singer pursuing a Masters in London.
